What is an intellectual disability?
Intellectual disability refers to challenges some people face in learning and often communicating. Typically, present from birth or an early age, persons with intellectual disabilities often require some form of lifelong support. Intellectual disability is distinct from psycho-social disability. Formerly referred to as “mental retardation” people with intellectual disabilities have rejected this label and prefer intellectual disability or developmental disability. Often, the most serious challenges persons with intellectual disabilities face are the stereotypes and negative assumptions of others. It is estimated about 2% of the global population has an intellectual disability.
